My fascination with mapping has intersected with my love for painting the figure in action. The new illustrated topographic maps are on authentic maps, painted in gouache. (which has a thicker consistency than traditional watercolor. I enjoy taking custom orders for paintings using customer’s photos on requested maps. I like to play with the figure and place them in fun spots on the maps… whether it is of a rockclimber hanging from the interstate highway line or a biker racing down a river gorge elevation.
Coming from the flat Midwest, I love the rich topography found in Virginia, so I often oil paint on location. The Shenandoah National Park is 5 minutes away so I often grab my paints or camera and catch glimpses of truly happy people as they enjoy the great outdoors. Fly fishermen, Rock Climbers and, Kayakers are all wonderful models, and the Appalachian Trail offers its share of hearty backpackers ready to pose for a cookie!
So many years were spent working and reaching and climbing through my art career and the journey has been far more exhilarating than I could have imagined! My education started at SMU, followed by the Academy of Art in San Francisco, and the Corcoran in Washington DC. I earned my MFA at VCU in Richmond, VA.
